Breaking Barriers: Women in Communications, Public Relations, and Journalism

WHM blog

March marks Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women around the world. In communications, public relations, and journalism, women have played a pivotal role in shaping narratives, amplifying voices, and driving meaningful conversations. As a woman-owned business, Buchanan Public Relations is proud to recognize and honor the trailblazing women who have paved the way for the next generation of industry leaders.

From storytelling and media strategy to reputation management, women have long been at the forefront of the communications field. While journalism was once a male-dominated industry, pioneers like Ida B. Wells, Nellie Bly, Anne Franklin, and Barbara Walters broke barriers, proving that women not only belong in the field but can lead it with innovation and integrity. Today, women continue to shape the media landscape, covering critical issues, championing diverse voices, and influencing public perception and policy.

In public relations, women comprise the majority of the workforce, with studies indicating that nearly 70% of PR professionals are female. As a certified woman-owned business through the Women’s Business Enterprise Council (WBEC), Buchanan Public Relations understands the importance of fostering an environment where women can lead and thrive. This month, we’re proud to highlight some of the influential women who have made an impact on our industry.

Gwen Ifill

A respected journalist and news anchor, Gwen Ifill broke barriers as one of the first Black women to host a nationally televised public affairs program, Washington Week. Ifill also co-anchored the PBS NewsHour with Judy Woodruff and made history as the first Black woman to moderate a vice-presidential debate in 2004 and 2008. Her dedication to political journalism has paved the way for more diverse voices in the news industry.

Betsy Plank

Often referred to as the “First Lady of Public Relations,” Betsy Plank had a groundbreaking 63-year career, achieving many firsts for women in PR leadership. She was a passionate advocate for PR education. She earned numerous honors, including the Gold Anvil Award from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the Distinguished Service Award from the Arthur W. Page Society.

Muriel Fox

A co-founder of the National Organization for Women (NOW), Muriel Fox was also a pioneering public relations executive. She became one of the first female leaders at Carl Byoir & Associates, one of the country’s largest PR firms at the time.  She received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Matrix Award from New York Women in Communications and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Veteran Feminists of America.

Judy Smith

A trailblazer in crisis communications, Judy Smith is the inspiration behind the hit TV show Scandal. As the founder of Smith & Company, she has advised high-profile clients and played a pivotal role in shaping the modern practice of crisis PR. Her expertise has shaped the field of strategic communications and reputational management, influencing how public figures and organizations navigate tough situations. Smith continues to influence the industry through her leadership, mentorship, and groundbreaking approach to navigating public crises.

Doris Fleischman

One of the earliest women in public relations, Doris Fleischman was a writer, feminist, and equal partner in the firm she ran with her husband, Edward Bernays. She played a key role in shaping early PR practices and strongly advocated for women’s rights, authoring influential articles and books on women’s careers and issues.

At Buchanan Public Relations, we keep these talented women in the forefront of our minds when training the next generation of women communicators. Through tailored mentorship, leadership development, and advocacy, we aim to set up all women for success. We are proud of the work that has been done by our talented team of communicators, and are excited about what the future holds.
