How I am Navigating My First PR Role

Starting a new job straight out of college is exciting, and a little overwhelming. One day I was living in my college house in Delaware with my best friends, and feeling like graduation was the end of the world. Less than three weeks later, I started my first job in public relations in Philadelphia.

While I’m still learning the ropes of professional life, I’ve discovered a few key mindset shifts over the past couple months that have helped me stay grounded, grow and enjoy the process.

Here are the three philosophies I’m keeping in mind as I navigate my first full-time public relations role:

  1. Be Open to Everything

When you’re new, every task is a chance to learn. I’ve learned not to turn down opportunities, even if they’re outside my comfort zone. Regardless of how big and important the task seems, saying yes and embracing new experiences has already taught me so much more than I expected.

I am the first person to admit that I often feel the need to be good at things right away. I am trying to remind myself that being open also means accepting that I’m not going to be great at everything on the first try. Everyone starts somewhere, and it’s okay to be green if you are curious, engaged, and willing to learn.

  1. Be Curious

Building off of the first point, my second philosophy (and maybe the most important one) is to be curious. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned so far is that asking questions isn’t a sign of inexperience, it’s a sign that you care, and want to grow. Whether I need to confirm the proper format, get context on a client matter, or just hear tips from a more seasoned professional, asking questions can never hurt and is key to making sure I am producing my best work. Taking the time to fully understand a task up front saves confusion later and shows my supervisors I am putting in an effort and paying attention.

  1. Progress Over Perfection

In school, I was used to polishing every project before turning it in. When the end goal is an “A”, or maintaining a high GPA, perfection is not only a goal we all strive for—it’s an expectation. In agency life, things move quickly, and it’s more important to be responsive, adaptable and open to feedback. I’ve learned to share drafts before they’re perfect, ask for edits and focus on improving with every assignment.

These mindsets, staying open, asking questions and embracing progress, are helping me navigate the learning curve of a first job in PR. If you’re in a similar position, or thinking about applying for post-grad jobs, I hope these reminders help you feel a little more confident as you find your footing.
