Where Are They Now?
Maureen Bell Teaches At-Risk Youth in Desert

INTERNED IN: 2013

EDUCATION: Temple University, 2012, B.A. Communications with a concentration in PRMaureen Bell

CURRENTLY: I work as a Field Guide for Outback Therapeutic Expeditions in Lehi, Utah.

I teach teens coping mechanisms and survival skills in the desert. Many of these youth are struggling with tendencies toward drug, alcohol and video abuse. I’m with them 24×7 in the desert. We make everything while we’re in the desert – from backpacks, to spoons, to fires.

Before that, I served for 28 months in the Peace Corps in Rwanda, as a secondary English teacher. I also spent a year teaching English in Santiago, Chile.

My interest in global travel was sparked when I spent a college semester abroad in Spain. A common theme that weaves all of my jobs together is helping others combined with the joy of learning about other cultures.

WHAT I LEARNED AT BPR: I learned how to market myself. The support I received at Buchanan PR ultimately gave me the confidence to pursue other things.

ADVICE TO STUDENTS: Just try it. Experience and explore different things. Don’t be afraid to try something that’s foreign to you.

And talk to your professors more! (I did not and now wish I had.)
