For the fourth installment in our “Where Are They Now?” blog series, which highlights the career trajectories of former Buchanan PR interns, we feature Kellie Connors, who interned with the agency from November 2007 through February 2008. Read on for Kelly’s experiences working in PR and her advice for those just starting out in the field.
Where are you living and what is your current job title?
I am currently the Vice President of SS|PR, a tech PR firm in Princeton, NJ.
What is the most important or valuable lesson you learned during your internship with BPR?
The most important thing I learned at BPR was the value of personal relationships with co-workers and the media. While at BPR, I developed a long-lasting relationship with one of the communications directors who frequently gave me advice on media outreach, writing projects and general industry do’s and don’ts. We still remain friends. I learned specifically from Anne that a friendly demeanor with clients, media and potential clients goes a long way. Her positive attitude and willingness to help just about anyone has stuck with me. I try to implement the same outlook.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out on a public relations career path?
Do an internship with Anne! Without Anne, I wouldn’t have earned the knowledge I needed to launch my career. Do as many internships as you can before you graduate. Even if you don’t always see value in a particular sector (maybe internal PR at a start-up or fetching coffee for a Fortune 500), you should try it out. You never know who you may meet. It could be a great networking opportunity!
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I love to sew. I’m just finishing up my first quilt.
What is the biggest trend you are seeing in the PR field right now?
The biggest trend I see in PR at the moment is convergence of social media and traditional media. For instance, it’s not just about getting a televised giveaway anymore. Now, we want the giveaway, the web clip and a mention on the show’s social media page.
Kellie — Thank you so much for contributing to our blog. I am so proud of you! What a big career you have built for yourself. Please come back and visit us soon. Thanks again! Anne
