As often as possible, I meet in person with the reporters I regularly work with or those with whom I want to work. It’s not about impersonal networking and pitching my clients. It’s possible to accomplish challenging media placement goals via email or over the phone, but isn’t relationship building at the very core of our profession?
Social media can be both helpful and hindering in a crisis. For PR professionals, it’s no longer an option of whether or not to utilize social media during these times—it’s a question of whether you can effectively leverage its instant broadcast capability to your advantage, or if you will get swept away by the social media rumor mill.
It’s important for those of us in the field to coach the next generation of PR professionals and seek out the opinions of more seasoned communicators, especially since our industry is continually evolving.
